Autonomous Insect!

The aim of my new project is to build robots that are remotely controlled and hopefully autonomous.
The ultimate project is a autonomous insect robot! What insect should I mimic?

But first steps first. Build a wheeled robot that is remotely controlled and can detect obstacles and reponds by avoiding them.
What do I need?
  1. Microcontroller
  2. Sensor - ultrasonic
  3. servo motor for stering
  4. permanent magnet DC motor for forward motion
